Short answer
Shipping is included only when the quotation says it is
A custom packaging quote may cover production only, production plus an estimated freight charge, door-to-door transport, or DDP delivery to a named place. These are not interchangeable. Before comparing suppliers, check the destination, transport mode, customs scope, duty and tax treatment, warehouse services, exclusions, and quote-validity date. For Amazon or 3PL delivery, also confirm labels, carton data, appointments, pallets, and the receiving instructions for the specific shipment.
Papyrn packaging team experience
International packaging inquiries often ask for a unit price before the destination or delivery route is known. That can produce two totals that look comparable but cover different work. One supplier may quote boxes at the factory, another may include delivery to a local forwarder, and a third may estimate DDP delivery to the buyer's address. The lowest visible unit price may therefore create a higher landed cost later.
Packaging shipments are also unusual because flat boxes can be light but bulky. Printed tissue paper, cards, stickers, and filler pack differently, while large corrugated blanks can create considerable carton volume. Papyrn can discuss DDP, door-to-door, Amazon warehouse, and buyer-forwarder arrangements after the packaging specification and destination details are confirmed. Availability and exact scope depend on the current route, product, destination, and receiving rules.
1. Four quote scopes buyers should separate
Use the written quotation, not the sales label alone. Each quote should identify the named origin or destination, included services, exclusions, and any assumptions that can change the final charge.
Packaging production and the stated packing method
International freight, import charges, and destination delivery unless explicitly listed
A provisional transport cost based on the available carton, weight, route, and destination data
A final rate if carton data, shipment date, customs details, or carrier space can still change
Collection from origin and delivery to the named address through an arranged transport service
Import duty and tax unless the quote specifically states a duty-paid term such as DDP
Delivery under the agreed DDP scope to a precisely named destination, including the seller-side responsibilities defined for that arrangement
Unlisted services, changed warehouse requirements, buyer-caused storage, or destinations where the proposed import arrangement is not feasible
A useful comparison shows the packaging price and logistics price separately even when they appear in one total. This makes later changes to quantity, box size, transport mode, or destination easier to understand.
2. Door-to-door and DDP do not mean the same thing
Door-to-door describes a transport route: goods are collected at origin and delivered to an address. It does not by itself say who is responsible for export clearance, import clearance, duty, tax, customs documents, or destination charges.
DDP is an Incoterms rule. Under the ICC description, the seller carries the agreed costs and risks to the named destination and handles export and import formalities, including applicable duties under that contract. The named place matters. DDP to a buyer's warehouse is not the same destination as DDP to a port, forwarder's depot, 3PL, or Amazon fulfillment center.
Ask the supplier to write:
“DDP to [full named place], including [listed services], excluding [listed exceptions], valid until [date].”
DDP feasibility still needs confirmation. Importer arrangements, tax treatment, regulated goods, local customs practice, warehouse access, and marketplace requirements vary by country and shipment. This guide explains purchasing questions; it is not customs or legal advice.
3. Why an early freight estimate may not be the final charge
A reliable freight quote needs shipment data. Before production, suppliers may only have a calculated flat size and an estimated packing method. After production and export packing, the actual carton count, measurements, and gross weights can be checked. Rates and capacity can also change between inquiry, deposit, completion, and dispatch.
Finished quantity and packing method
Flat boxes, tissue paper, cards, stickers, and filler have different packing densities. Mixed packaging sets can require several carton types rather than one simple weight calculation.
Export carton count and dimensions
Carriers charge for the shipment that leaves the factory, not the finished box size shown in a product drawing. Final carton dimensions and gross weights provide a better basis than early estimates.
Destination details
Country alone is not enough. Postal code, full address, commercial or residential status, loading access, warehouse type, and any remote-area conditions can affect the route and charges.
Transport mode and service level
Express, air freight, ocean groupage, full-container transport, rail, and truck services use different charging rules and local handling arrangements.
Actual and dimensional weight
Large, light cartons may be charged by the space they occupy. The applicable calculation depends on the carrier, service, route, and account terms.
Customs and product information
Commodity description, customs value, tariff classification, origin, and destination rules influence clearance. Packaging alone and packaging shipped with other products may follow different declarations.
UPS explains dimensional weight as a measure related to the amount of space a package occupies. Shopify likewise asks merchants to maintain accurate package dimensions and weights for shipping calculations. The exact billing method is route- and carrier-specific, so do not apply one universal divisor to every packaging shipment.
4. Express, air, ocean, rail, and truck routes solve different problems
Express courier service can be practical for samples, urgent labels, cards, or smaller packaging quantities. Air freight may suit a larger urgent shipment, but billable weight and destination handling still matter. Ocean freight can be appropriate for higher-volume, non-urgent packaging, while groupage shipments can include origin, port, consolidation, customs, and destination charges that need to be itemized. Rail and truck options depend strongly on the origin-destination corridor.
There is no permanently cheapest mode. Compare total delivered cost, estimated transit window, customs scope, pickup and delivery access, warehouse receiving time, and the cost of arriving late. For a product launch, a split plan can sometimes work: send a small urgent quantity first and the balance by a slower route. The supplier and forwarder must confirm whether the packing and documents support that plan.
5. Shipping custom packaging to an Amazon warehouse
Amazon warehouse delivery should be planned as a specific fulfillment shipment, not as a generic country destination. The ecommerce packaging ordered from Papyrn is the product being transported to Amazon. It still needs appropriate master shipping cartons, carton identification, shipment data, and a route that follows the receiving plan.
Amazon's Send to Amazon workflow creates the shipment and guides sellers through packing details, destination assignment, labels, and carrier steps. Amazon also publishes product preparation, packaging, barcode, and labeling requirements. Requirements can change and may differ by product, marketplace, shipment type, and program. The seller should create and control the shipment in Seller Central, then send the current files and instructions to the supplier or forwarder.
Amazon warehouse delivery is suitable only when the shipment type and current receiving workflow allow it. The route, carrier, and packing plan should be checked against that shipment before dispatch.
Amazon warehouse delivery checklist
- Amazon marketplace and destination country
- Shipment plan created in Seller Central
- Assigned fulfillment-center address or addresses
- Unit barcode or FNSKU requirements where applicable
- FBA box ID labels for each shipping carton
- Carton contents, dimensions, gross weight, and carton count
- Case-packed or individual-unit shipment status
- Pallet labels, pallet pattern, and appointment needs when required
- Carrier, delivery-window, and receiving instructions shown in the current workflow
Do not confuse the printed artwork on a mailer box with an Amazon unit label or shipping-carton label. Define who supplies, checks, prints, and applies each label. A warehouse address alone is insufficient because Amazon may assign multiple destinations or update shipment instructions.
6. 3PL and warehouse delivery need receiving data too
A Shopify brand's 3PL may require advance shipment notices, booking references, carton labels, pallet labels, carton-size limits, maximum weights, or restricted receiving hours. Storage and handling charges can also depend on carton or pallet configuration. Ask for the warehouse receiving guide before the supplier finalizes export packing.
Compare express or a suitable door-to-door route. Confirm whether duties and taxes are included before comparing totals.
Request the 3PL receiving guide, booking rules, carton labels, delivery hours, and any pallet or carton limits before production is packed.
Create the shipment in Seller Central first, then provide the assigned destination and labels. Do not print warehouse labels from an old shipment.
Ask the supplier for product value, carton count, dimensions, gross weight, pickup address, and readiness date. Define whether delivery is to the forwarder's warehouse or collected from the factory.
7. Compare landed cost instead of box unit price alone
The packaging unit price is only one part of the buying decision. Add sampling, packing, export cartons, international transport, customs scope, destination delivery, warehouse receiving, pallet work, labeling, and any storage caused by early or late arrival. Then compare suppliers using the same quantity, specification, destination, and delivery responsibility.
Planning formula
Packaging production + samples + export packing + freight + customs scope + destination services + warehouse preparation = comparable landed plan
Keep estimates and final charges visibly separate. A supplier should explain which figures are confirmed, which depend on final carton data, and how long the logistics quotation remains valid.
8. What to send for a useful delivery quotation
Send the packaging brief and delivery brief together. Missing one side usually causes avoidable follow-up or a provisional price that cannot be compared fairly.
Shipping and warehouse quote checklist
- Packaging product, dimensions, material, print, finish, and quantity
- Destination country, postal code, full address, and address type
- Requested route: express, air, sea, door-to-door, DDP, 3PL, or Amazon warehouse
- Required arrival window and any fixed launch or receiving date
- Whether the order is packaging only or consolidated with other goods
- Importer, tax, customs, or broker arrangement already in place
- Warehouse receiving guide, carton limits, labels, booking, and pallet requirements
- Amazon shipment plan and current Seller Central labels when applicable
9. Common mistakes that create delivery surprises
- Comparing a factory product price with a delivered price.
- Using “door-to-door” as proof that duties and taxes are included.
- Requesting a final rate with only a destination country.
- Calculating freight from finished box dimensions instead of export cartons.
- Sending an Amazon warehouse address without a current shipment plan and labels.
- Finalizing carton packing before checking 3PL or marketplace limits.
- Assuming an old rate, route, label, or warehouse instruction is still valid.
10. External references for current delivery planning
Use ICC material to understand Incoterms responsibilities, carrier sources for current charging rules, and Amazon or 3PL instructions for the exact receiving workflow. Ask the supplier to translate those requirements into packing and dispatch steps for the confirmed order.

FAQ
Custom packaging shipping questions
Does a custom packaging quote include shipping?
Only if shipping is explicitly included. A product-only quote, freight estimate, door-to-door quote, and DDP quote cover different costs and responsibilities. Ask for the destination, route, included charges, exclusions, and quote validity to be written clearly.
Is door-to-door shipping the same as DDP?
No. Door-to-door describes a transport service from origin to a named address. DDP is an Incoterms rule that assigns extensive delivery, clearance, duty, and tax responsibilities to the seller. A door-to-door service does not automatically include import duty or tax.
Can Papyrn ship custom packaging to an Amazon warehouse?
Papyrn can discuss suitable delivery arrangements to Amazon fulfillment centers. The buyer must create the current shipment plan in Seller Central and provide the assigned warehouse, carton labels, product preparation details, and other receiving instructions before dispatch.
Why can the freight estimate change after production?
Early estimates may use projected carton sizes and weights. The final shipment can differ because of finished quantity, packing density, carton count, gross weight, carrier capacity, route, fuel or local charges, and the date the goods are ready.
What address information is needed for a shipping quote?
Provide the destination country, postal code, full street address, consignee type, and whether the address is a home, business, 3PL, or marketplace warehouse. Add unloading, appointment, pallet, and delivery-hour requirements if relevant.
Are Amazon labels automatically included with packaging production?
No. Printed packaging artwork and Amazon logistics labels are separate. Amazon shipment and carton labels are created from the seller's current workflow and must match the specific shipment. Confirm who prints and applies each label before packing.
